What did you like (best) about the Workshop?
Discussion Panel on Carrer Options in University & Industry
Open atmosphere, hospitality
Time spent by Googlers
Interaction between scientists and practitioners (Googlers).
Interesting talks (lots of new stuff from Googler's talks; see how things look on practitioner's side).
The location.
Getting to think about doing an internship here.
Getting in touch with other researchers, getting to know their area.
Getting in touch with Googlers, learning what is being done in "industry"
That is was organized inside Google and we had the chance to meet this people.
The "unusual" location with all its advantages.
Not too many technically overloaded talks.
Great atmosphere.
Insights into the art of Google work and a bit closer look at the algorithmic problems coming up here.
Nice informal atmosphere.
Get some insights into Google, especially the office tour.
Many opportunities to talk to people.
Well organized.
Interaction.
This kid of workshops is a good source of problems that really stem from the practice. I also hope that it will be a good basis for cooperation between academy and industry.
Career Panel was very informative.
Mixture of presented problems (Google Talks) and Algorithms was good.
Of course, the ?eat was great.
The tour through Google was interesting.
Broad range of topics.
The interesting talks from Google staff.
To see how Google works.
Career Panel was great!
But also talks by Googlers were quite interesting.
The talks of Googlers, which have been "high-level" and thus very easy to understand.
The location.
The discussion with Thomas, Lars, and Peter.
Getting a relatively good insight into Google.
The career panel.
Panel discussion -> definitely the most interesting. I loved the talks by the Googlers showing their topics, challenges they have, how they approach them.
Many different ideas (both academic and Google).
Different people.
Presentations by Googlers, because normally you don't get an insight into that.
Relaxed atmosphere.
The food.
See how Google works.
Talks by Googlers!
Many different people with different backgrounds.
Good exchange of problems.
Anything you didn't like?
Limited inisghts in algorithms applied Googler's problems posed (not severe).
More open problems on Googler's side would have been nice.
Some open problems presented lacked a bit of detail / motivation.
None.
No Google-mug to buy
Everything was fine.
Googlers seem to be bounded by what the are allowed to say and not. Sometimes they are [unreadable word] to name the underlying use-case that defines the problem.
Perhaps too many talks, it was hard to follow in the evening.
Not so many Googlers did attend.
The dinner at Zürichberg.
Some Google talks very high-level.
The talks were very nice but probably most people didn't learn that much from them.
Googler talks only presented problems in a "please solve that" manner.
Maybe it was a bit long for the first day, maybe ...
Maybe a bit too practical / technical.
Swiss power plugs.
More talks instead of the career panel (I'm a senior researcher).
More people could ask more questions.
Any suggestions for future such Workshops?
Continue exchange!
Interaction with more Googlers.
More talks. (One day extra?)
Do it again!
More Googe workshops
More such workshops please!
Some / more open discussion on overlaps / common interests.
More information about carparking possibilities on the website.
Public transportation tickets to the restaurant should be bought in advance.
Better into(?) on logistics: hotels, car parking, public transport.
Obvisouly such a workshop is very useful for Google, since it can forward really difficult problems into the academia. It is one of the obvious benefits for Google. As we already discussed in the workshop, the quality of "coding" is very poor in the academic community. Therefore, the obvious benefit for the academia would be to learn better software engineering standards or techniques that Google probably possessed and looks like not being a secret information. Hence it would be very nice to have this kind of information by Googlers, especially for young researchers.
Small breaks between talks.
Make it regularly.
Organization a bit more in advance, if possible.
No suggestions.
Nothing specific, but it would be great to repeat it once.
More information about current Google projects.
Less talks more "discussing problems", so that more people are actively involved.
More time to plan ... but do it again!
Maybe a bit more discussions like the panel on Tuesday. Depending on the mix (Prof,
PhD? students) of the participants maybe you can put more junior employees on the panel so that students can see / hear more direct experiences of what would expect them at Google.
Just keep on doing these workshops.
No.
Maybe a "focus afternoon" with several talks on one topic, with more technical talks. (In general, the short talk format was good!)
